- Australian Bass
- CarpCarp are a large introduced freshwater fish which are common throughout most of NSW. They are well known as a pest because of their destructive bottom-feeding habits, which stir up sediments and muddy the water. Over the years carp have been the focus of countless control efforts by government bodies and concerned members of the community. Unfortunately, any pest as widespread and abundant as carp is impossible to eradicate completely. All the same, many people around the State are involved in programs to tackle this pest and help restore waterways to tip the balance in favour of native fish. For more detailed information regarding distributions, feeding, breeding and habitat regarding Carp in NSW, follow the link below. All states and territories should follow their Local regulations.
- Golden PerchGolden Perch, also known as yellowbelly, callop, perch, Murray Perch or white perch, naturally inhabit the Murray-Darling river system (except at high elevations) and exist in the internal drainage systems of Lake Eyre and the Bulloo River. Recent evidence suggests that there may be a genetic difference between populations resulting in the existence of a separate species. They have been translocated into other rivers of NSW, Queensland and the Northern Territory. They prefer warm, slow moving, turbid streams. Windamere Dam, located in the NSW Central Tablelands and situated along the Cudgegong River about 30km south-east of Mudgee is considered to be the premier Golden Perch fishery of this Country. Our go to fly pattern is the Donny Brasco.
- Murray CodMurray Cod generally prefer slow flowing, turbid water in streams and rivers, favouring deeper water around boulders, undercut banks, overhanging vegetation and logs. These Cod are voracious feeders and predators. Their diet consists of fish, crustaceans, water birds, frogs, turtles and terrestrial animals such as mice and snakes.
- Redfin PerchRedfin perch are listed as a notifiable species under Schedule 1 of the Biosecurity Regulation 2017. As such it is illegal to release (other than immediately at point of capture, which is discouraged), or to move, buy or sell, or be in possession of live Redfin Perch. Heavy penalties apply for non-compliance. If you suspect the presence of Redfin perch in a new location within NSW (see map of known distribution below) report your suspicions to NSW DPI (via the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline 1800 675 888, or if during business hours to Aquatic Biosecurity on 02 4982 1232, via email on [email protected], or via your local Fisheries Office). Other common names: European perch, redfin, English perch, Eurasian perch. Redfin perch, also known as English perch, is a medium sized freshwater fish native to northern Europe. First introduced to Australia in the 1860s for angling, Redfin perch are now widespread across the cooler parts of NSW, ACT, Victoria, Tasmania, south-eastern South Australia and the south-western corner of Western Australia. - BreamYellowfin Bream are found along the NSW coast, as well as in Queensland and Victoria. Bream inhabit estuaries up to the brackish water limit (the change from salt to freshwater) and inshore rocky reef habitats near ocean beaches and rocky headlands. Yellowfin Bream have a silver to olive-green body with yellowish pectoral, ventral and anal fins. They are opportunistic feeders with their diet including small crabs, prawns, molluscs, pipis and small fish. Our go to fly pattern for Bream is the Raw Prawn in Tan.

- FlatheadDusky Flathead are found in estuaries and coastal bays, from Cairns in Queensland to the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria. They occur over sand, mud, gravel and seagrass and can inhabit estuarine waters up to the tidal limit. They are more commonly caught during the summer months. Our go to Fly Pattern for Flathead is the Clouser Minnow in Pink/White and Tan/White colours.
- Giant Trevally
- KingfishYellowtail Kingfish have long bodies and a slender head, which is longer than their body depth. Yellowtail Kingfish are generally a blue or blue-green colour on their back, white-silver below. The caudal fin is yellow. The largest fish commonly caught are up to 1 m long, weighing 10-15 kg. Maximum of 70 kg and approximately 2 m in length. Yellowtail Kingfish occur in ocean waters from Queensland south to Western Australia, and inhabit temperate waters worldwide. They are often found associated with floating objects in the ocean and pylons and jetties within bays. Juveniles are commonly found in schools.
- LuderickGenerally restricted to shallow coastal waters and estuaries along the east coast, between southern Queensland (around Noosa Heads) and Tasmania. Luderick are often found in large schools around rocky outcrops and jetties. Luderick are generally dark green/brown in colour with a silvery-grey belly. They possess 8-12 dark, narrow vertical bands across the back. They are mainly herbivorous, feeding on seagrass and green algae. - Mulloway (Jewfish)Mulloway – the silver ghosts of the Estuaries Mulloway are mostly silver with a blue/grey, green, or bronze coloured back. They possess a line of silver/white spots that follow the lateral line and sometimes have a black mark at the pectoral fin base. Maximum of approximately 60 kg and a length of 1.8 m. Mulloway are found in coastal waters from Rockhampton in Queensland to North West Cape, Western Australia (excluding Tasmania). Often confused with Teraglin, the key difference is the end of the Mulloway’s caudal fin is convex (rounded), whereas the caudal fin of Teraglin is concave.

- SalmonAustralian Salmon have a robust body with one continuous dorsal fin (spines & soft rays). Body colour varies from greyish green to steely blue above, usually with yellow to dark spots, and a silver underbelly. The Australian Salmon is not related to the true salmonoid fish but rather to the perch family. The fish are common in large schools with the juveniles often in coastal bays. Occurs from Tweed Heads through to Port Philip Bay (Victoria) and Tasmania. Our go to Fly Pattern for Australian Salmon is the Surf Candy with an Olive / White colouration.
- SaratogaThere are two species of Saratoga found in Australia – Scleropages jardini and the Scleropage leichardti. The distribution of the two species is quite different with the generally larger jardini found in the Northern Territory from the Gulf of Carpentaria across the Top into Western Australia. Small pockets of jardini live in the western flowing river systems of the Cape York Peninsula. They are a large fish that can grow up to 90cm in length, but are commonly 50 to 65cm long and can weigh up to about 4kg. Saratoga are mouth brooders, the female will carry the fertilized eggs (approx 60 to 80) in her mouth till hatching. They are carnivorous opportunistic predators, with excellent eyesight, a large mouth with sharp teeth and a long body, dark brown to olive green along the back, with lighter sides and a white belly, flat on top with no dorsal spine and the dorsal fin set back towards the tail. The lower jaw slopes steeply upwards and carries two fleshy barbels on the chin. The eyes are on top of the head and slightly sunk, helping them to be excellent surface feeders. - WhitingSand Whiting, also known as Summer, Silver and Blue-nose Whiting, inhabit the inshore waters of eastern Australia including coastal beaches, sand bars, bays, coastal lakes, estuaries and rivers as far as the tidal limits. Sand Whiting generally favour sandy or muddy sand substrates in shallow water. One of our favourite species to fish with Disco Shrimp surface flies in the Summer. Keep the fly moving consistently.

- Australian Bass
- CarpCarp are a large introduced freshwater fish which are common throughout most of NSW. They are well known as a pest because of their destructive bottom-feeding habits, which stir up sediments and muddy the water. Over the years carp have been the focus of countless control efforts by government bodies and concerned members of the community. Unfortunately, any pest as widespread and abundant as carp is impossible to eradicate completely. All the same, many people around the State are involved in programs to tackle this pest and help restore waterways to tip the balance in favour of native fish. For more detailed information regarding distributions, feeding, breeding and habitat regarding Carp in NSW, follow the link below. All states and territories should follow their Local regulations.
- Golden PerchGolden Perch, also known as yellowbelly, callop, perch, Murray Perch or white perch, naturally inhabit the Murray-Darling river system (except at high elevations) and exist in the internal drainage systems of Lake Eyre and the Bulloo River. Recent evidence suggests that there may be a genetic difference between populations resulting in the existence of a separate species. They have been translocated into other rivers of NSW, Queensland and the Northern Territory. They prefer warm, slow moving, turbid streams. Windamere Dam, located in the NSW Central Tablelands and situated along the Cudgegong River about 30km south-east of Mudgee is considered to be the premier Golden Perch fishery of this Country. Our go to fly pattern is the Donny Brasco.
- Murray CodMurray Cod generally prefer slow flowing, turbid water in streams and rivers, favouring deeper water around boulders, undercut banks, overhanging vegetation and logs. These Cod are voracious feeders and predators. Their diet consists of fish, crustaceans, water birds, frogs, turtles and terrestrial animals such as mice and snakes.
- Redfin PerchRedfin perch are listed as a notifiable species under Schedule 1 of the Biosecurity Regulation 2017. As such it is illegal to release (other than immediately at point of capture, which is discouraged), or to move, buy or sell, or be in possession of live Redfin Perch. Heavy penalties apply for non-compliance. If you suspect the presence of Redfin perch in a new location within NSW (see map of known distribution below) report your suspicions to NSW DPI (via the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline 1800 675 888, or if during business hours to Aquatic Biosecurity on 02 4982 1232, via email on [email protected], or via your local Fisheries Office). Other common names: European perch, redfin, English perch, Eurasian perch. Redfin perch, also known as English perch, is a medium sized freshwater fish native to northern Europe. First introduced to Australia in the 1860s for angling, Redfin perch are now widespread across the cooler parts of NSW, ACT, Victoria, Tasmania, south-eastern South Australia and the south-western corner of Western Australia. - Black BreamThe Tasmanian Black Bream (Acanthopagrus butcheri) is a unique species known for its cautious nature and remarkable fighting spirit. They are primarily found in estuaries, coastal rivers, and sheltered bays across Tasmania. These fish are adaptable to various salinities and can thrive in environments ranging from freshwater to saline estuaries. Black Bream are opportunistic feeders, relying on crustaceans, mollusks, and small invertebrates for sustenance. They are often found in structure-rich environments, such as submerged rock ledges, fallen trees, oyster racks, and underwater vegetation, where they can hide from predators and find food. Black Bream are a popular target for anglers due to their resilience and ability to withstand environmental changes. They complete their life cycle within a single estuary, making them a true estuarine resident of
- BreamYellowfin Bream are found along the NSW coast, as well as in Queensland and Victoria. Bream inhabit estuaries up to the brackish water limit (the change from salt to freshwater) and inshore rocky reef habitats near ocean beaches and rocky headlands. Yellowfin Bream have a silver to olive-green body with yellowish pectoral, ventral and anal fins. They are opportunistic feeders with their diet including small crabs, prawns, molluscs, pipis and small fish. Our go to fly pattern for Bream is the Raw Prawn in Tan.

- FlatheadDusky Flathead are found in estuaries and coastal bays, from Cairns in Queensland to the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria. They occur over sand, mud, gravel and seagrass and can inhabit estuarine waters up to the tidal limit. They are more commonly caught during the summer months. Our go to Fly Pattern for Flathead is the Clouser Minnow in Pink/White and Tan/White colours.
- Giant Trevally
- KingfishYellowtail Kingfish have long bodies and a slender head, which is longer than their body depth. Yellowtail Kingfish are generally a blue or blue-green colour on their back, white-silver below. The caudal fin is yellow. The largest fish commonly caught are up to 1 m long, weighing 10-15 kg. Maximum of 70 kg and approximately 2 m in length. Yellowtail Kingfish occur in ocean waters from Queensland south to Western Australia, and inhabit temperate waters worldwide. They are often found associated with floating objects in the ocean and pylons and jetties within bays. Juveniles are commonly found in schools.
- LuderickGenerally restricted to shallow coastal waters and estuaries along the east coast, between southern Queensland (around Noosa Heads) and Tasmania. Luderick are often found in large schools around rocky outcrops and jetties. Luderick are generally dark green/brown in colour with a silvery-grey belly. They possess 8-12 dark, narrow vertical bands across the back. They are mainly herbivorous, feeding on seagrass and green algae. - Mulloway (Jewfish)Mulloway – the silver ghosts of the Estuaries Mulloway are mostly silver with a blue/grey, green, or bronze coloured back. They possess a line of silver/white spots that follow the lateral line and sometimes have a black mark at the pectoral fin base. Maximum of approximately 60 kg and a length of 1.8 m. Mulloway are found in coastal waters from Rockhampton in Queensland to North West Cape, Western Australia (excluding Tasmania). Often confused with Teraglin, the key difference is the end of the Mulloway’s caudal fin is convex (rounded), whereas the caudal fin of Teraglin is concave.

- SalmonAustralian Salmon have a robust body with one continuous dorsal fin (spines & soft rays). Body colour varies from greyish green to steely blue above, usually with yellow to dark spots, and a silver underbelly. The Australian Salmon is not related to the true salmonoid fish but rather to the perch family. The fish are common in large schools with the juveniles often in coastal bays. Occurs from Tweed Heads through to Port Philip Bay (Victoria) and Tasmania. Our go to Fly Pattern for Australian Salmon is the Surf Candy with an Olive / White colouration.
- SaratogaThere are two species of Saratoga found in Australia – Scleropages jardini and the Scleropage leichardti. The distribution of the two species is quite different with the generally larger jardini found in the Northern Territory from the Gulf of Carpentaria across the Top into Western Australia. Small pockets of jardini live in the western flowing river systems of the Cape York Peninsula. They are a large fish that can grow up to 90cm in length, but are commonly 50 to 65cm long and can weigh up to about 4kg. Saratoga are mouth brooders, the female will carry the fertilized eggs (approx 60 to 80) in her mouth till hatching. They are carnivorous opportunistic predators, with excellent eyesight, a large mouth with sharp teeth and a long body, dark brown to olive green along the back, with lighter sides and a white belly, flat on top with no dorsal spine and the dorsal fin set back towards the tail. The lower jaw slopes steeply upwards and carries two fleshy barbels on the chin. The eyes are on top of the head and slightly sunk, helping them to be excellent surface feeders.
