Micro Whiting Popper

1 fly per packet.

A micro sized popper that packs a lot of punch with Yellowfin Whiting.

Ensure that you have long nose forceps with you as these poppers are frequently inhaled.

My recommendations for successful Whiting sessions.

• Full Clear and Clear Tipped SA Magnitude Bonefish floating fly lines have a definitive advantage.
• A small Loop knot connection to the fly.
• Nylon must be used as the leader material.
• Cast long and with the wind. Windy days are better! Glassed out days are tough.
• Pop into the Chop.
• Work out the best part of the tide when the Whiting are active, there is a window where they switch ON, otherwise plenty of moochers can be seen in the skinny water, largely unresponsive fish. It’s not the fly; it’s the part of the tide.
• Fish structure like gullies, sand pancakes, patchy weed beds, runways, slots and the like.

Leaders will be something that you will need to discover what works for you. With CLEAR lines, we are running 4.5ft leaders, that’s right, 1/2 a fly rod length with this Micro Popper.

Retrieve – there is no secret formula, no set and forget technique. It’s the job of the angler to keep working it out and it changes with water depth, wind, tide and fish behaviour. It’s not all about being flat out, I have had Whiting eat this fly on long pause with an aggressive take.  The further you can cast, the longer the fly is in the water for the fish to pick up the sonic popping vibrations, the longer time you have to fish the fly for a positive eat.
