Bream on the fly become a regular target species in the cooler months, especially on those cool, crisp mornings throughout the Winter. The Hammerhead BMS, created by the great Muz Wilson, is one of those simple fly patterns that continues to deliver results. I will cover off tying the Hammerhead BMS with a new yarn material to our range from Sightcast Fishing in the USA. A simple pattern made even quicker to tie. Other fly-tying materials to consider when tying the BMS fly are Wapsi Leech Yarn, Hareline Trilobal Dubbing, SLF Dubbing and Hareline Polar Dubbing. All of these materials create effective BMS flies due to nature of the materials of either being brushed out nicely or in the case of the dubbings, are quite wirey and also brush out with ease to create that nice, translucent body. The BMS platform is baitfish orientated and with its translucent styling, makes it very appealing to Bream that feed on small prawns and baitfish. The colour options are incredibly endless and here i will cover the Olive / Orange combination that works so well in our local lake system.
Materials required for this version

Step 1.Lay a base of Semperfli 3/0 Olive Thread from the hook eye along the hook shank until you are directly above the hook barb.
| |
Step 2.Attach a pair of 5/32 Brass Dumbbells and fix with a series of cross over wraps. A drop of Gulff Minuteman Glue assists in keeping them in place.
| |
| |
Step 3.Tie in a small clump of Spawn Semi Seal dubbing as the tail, around a shank and a quarter length. The UV Steelhead Torch colour creates a neat hot spot.
| |
Step 4.Tie in a length of Sightcast Krystal Core yarn from behind the dumbbell eyes to the last thread wrap before the tail tie in.
| |
Step 5.Wrap the yarn foreward toward the dumbbells, ensuring the krystal core is laying very close to the previous wrap. Take the yarn to above the eyes on the last wrap, tie off and trim.
| |
Step 6.Tease out the yarn fibres with your dubbing brush. Build a small, tapered thread head and whip finish.
| |
Step 7.Apply a light coating of UV resin to the threads and set with your UV Torch. Loon Outdoors Flow or Solarez Bone Dry Plus are two options that I recommend.
| |
| |
Fish the fly on a 9ft tapered leader, around 8lb with a 2-3 ft length of 6lb tippet with an outfit in the 6 or 7 weight range. A floating flyline is essential for covering the flats and for a deeper presentation, an intermediate flyline is a good place to start. Use the Lefty’s Loop knot to attach the fly for better movement in the water.
